When considering any fitness-related investment, it’s crucial to prioritize safety, enjoyment, and measurable progress. These three guiding questions—Is it safe? Is it fun? Is it showing signs of progress as measured by you?—can help steer you toward a sustainable and effective routine.

1. Is It Safe?

Safety should always come first. This means ensuring that any exercise you do or equipment you use is appropriate for your current fitness level. According to a 2022 study by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), injuries in physical activities are often due to overestimating one’s capabilities or improperly using equipment. Before starting any new exercise, consult with a healthcare provider or fitness professional to ensure it aligns with your needs and abilities.

2. Is It Fun?

Enjoyment is key to maintaining consistency. You’re less likely to stick with your workout if you don’t enjoy it. A 2023 survey by ParticipACTION found that Canadians who enjoy their workouts are 60% more likely to maintain a regular exercise routine. Finding activities that you genuinely enjoy—whether it’s dancing, swimming, or hiking—can make exercise feel less like a chore and more like a rewarding experience.

3. Is It Showing Signs of Progress?

Lastly, measurable progress is crucial. It’s easy to get caught up in the latest fitness trends, but the true indicator of success is whether you’re seeing and feeling improvements in your body. Tracking your progress through simple metrics, such as how much weight you can lift or how far you can walk without getting tired, can provide motivation and a sense of accomplishment. A recent study by the Public Health Agency of Canada emphasized the importance of regular assessments to ensure that your fitness regimen is effective and beneficial.

Focus on Habits, Not Just Modalities

Many people tend to focus on specific fitness modalities—like yoga or CrossFit—without considering the importance of developing consistent habits. The key to long-term success is not the specific type of exercise you do, but how consistently you do it. A report by the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute (CFLRI) in 2023 highlighted that consistency in physical activity is more strongly correlated with overall health benefits than the specific type of exercise performed.

Fitness for All Ages

Movement is for everyone, regardless of age. For older adults, strength training combined with cardio is particularly beneficial. The CSEP recommends at least 200 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, which can be achieved with a 30-minute walk almost every day. Strength training is also recommended twice a week to maintain muscle mass and bone density, crucial factors in preventing age-related decline.

By focusing on safety, enjoyment, and measurable progress, and by developing consistent exercise habits, anyone can achieve their fitness goals. Remember, fitness is a lifelong journey that should be accessible and enjoyable for all, regardless of age or ability.
